101 Lessons I learned from my clients
|
In 101 Lessons I Learned From My Clients, I have gathered the essence or lessons to be garnered from the many scenarios, metaphors, old folk’s tales and common sense stories that I use in my client’s hypnotherapy sessions. Based on these lessons, various suggestions were created to help my clients overcome their emotional difficulties or become successful in their personal or professional lives. These stories, long forgotten snippets of teachings and values I have acquired in my life, have achieved great utility in my work with clients and while analyzing the issues at hand. Even though many of these little sayings may reflect concepts as old as time, they have proved relevant to my clients’ trials and tribulations, their goals and dreams, and in helping these people I allowed them to resurface in my mind. These clients allowed me to get outside of myself and my little world and to reach them where they were in their world, with the ultimate goal of helping them. The end goal of these ‘oldie but goodie’ lessons was to positively affect my clients’ lives with a tailored story to fit their individual problems.
During many sessions, prior to proceeding with the hypnosis itself, I ramble on, searching for the right combination of words or suggestions to use. In these one-on-one or group sessions, I like to express myself and get my point across in many ways. For example, if I want to show a client what a person does when they fall, I literally drop myself to the floor. Then, I tell them that the thing they need to do is to get back up, dust themselves off, and start walking again. I do whatever I need to do to serve my client (consciously or subconsciously) and to drive them to switch on the proverbial ‘light bulb’ in their head with the goal of keeping the fire raging inside.
By talking with the client, I find out what suggestion or suggestions would specifically work in their case. And in every case, I was inspired to impart some of these lessons that would apply to the particular client’s situation.
When I finally realized how these ‘Lessons’ affected them; I thought to myself that these many suggestions – basically consisting of little sentences describing scenarios, using bits of metaphors, old tales and parables I learned throughout my life – could work for others as well, be they therapists or not.
One big problem though – I hadn’t written anything down – Oops! I was used to ‘casting’ them off the top of my head while in session but never once thought about how important it could be to archive them.
One day a so-called ‘light bulb’ exploded rays of light inside my head. I said to myself, John, you are a hypnotist and you know how powerful the subconscious mind is – it is what you teach to each and every client when they come to session. Why not use your own subconscious mind to recall the many ‘Lessons’ you have given to your clients?
With that thought, I began to recall – via age regression – the many ‘Lessons’ I voiced during myriad hypnotherapy sessions. I would think of a specific client and mentally regurgitate the theme and memories of the session. Once I thought about these situations, some going back years past, my mind did the rest. In essence, I did what I advised my clients to do; I trusted myself and my subconscious.
The rest, as they say, is history!
I hope that these ‘Lessons’ work just as well for you in your personal or professional life as they did for me and my clients.
John
